PROFIT MAKING
Is elusive. After it seems useless to buy more expensive machinery I can
sometimes suggest a way which your competitor cannot follow, then profits
can be restored. I solicit correspon-

NOTICE, for example, the accompanying illustration
which was reproduced from a photograph taken in a
well-known plant. The lathe shown is fully 65 years old, (1860s)
and, while it still runs, it simply can't produce work in as
large quantities or as economically as a modern lathe-and
yet that lathe is taking up as much floor space as a modern
tool, requires the same calibre of operator as a modern ma-
chine, and costs more to operate, because of the necessity of
frequent repairs!

When this photograph was taken the lathe
was taking a cut 1/16 in. deep, 1/64 in. feed,
at 3S f t. cutting speed.
In comparison an
"American" lathe of the same size would
easily handle the identical work with a ~ in.
depth of cut, ~ in. feed, at 65 ft. cutting
speed, which means that a new "American"
